Unidad aicle

CELL, ORGANELLES AND TISSUES

The didactic unit I'm presenting is called "Cell, organelles and tissues". It is design to be used in the third course of Secondary Education.
The unit will be developed in six sessions of 55 minutes each.
The objectives aimed to be completed are:
·      To know about cell theory principles.
·      To distinguish different type of cells and its characteristics: eukaryotic, prokaryotic, animal, vegetal
·      To identify the different cell organelles and their function.
To know the different tissues created through cell organization.
We work the following contents:
·      Cell theory
·      Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
·      Cell organelle and its functions.
·      Similarities and differences between animal and vegetal cell.
·      Cell specialization: tissues.

We will use a participative and active methodology to make students part of the learning process. We will work with videos, adapted text; we will use different king of grouping to make the lessons more dynamic.

Session 1
We start the session with a brainstorm activity to check our pupil's background knowledge. We ask our students different questions and show some pictures to make them come to the conclusion that all living beings are made up of cells. We will provide them with specific vocabulary and structures to support oral expression. (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzWT8a9PVMCcWVFTNFVJR0l3M00)
Then we watch the video "the weird history of cell theory" to present them the basic principle of cell theory. Students will have to answer three questions before watching the video and check theirs answers with the information extracted from it. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OpBylwH9DU)
After watching the video we check the oral comprehension in order to introduce a reading comprehension activity based on the information from the video.
Students will read a summary of the video and will extract information to complete a timeline. https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzWT8a9PVMCcelRkeWhDR0RYWHc

Session 2
We begin the session with a brainstorm activity about the different types of cells. Then we present them a picture with eukaryote and prokaryote cells and ask them to highlight differences and similarities. We provide them with specific vocabulary and structures as an aid.
We ask the students to complete two different activities: link pictures and types of cells and complete a chart with eukaryote and prokaryote cells characteristics. Students will make these activities before having further information about cells. (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzWT8a9PVMCcTTRybkpKMWlEVkU)
We watch the video "prokaryote vs. eukaryote cells" to provide students with the complete information about type of cells. Then we correct the two previous activities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ-SMCmWB1s
Listening comprehension activity. Students will complete a text (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzWT8a9PVMCcWUFUUDQ3Q3FYTHc) with words from a cloud while listening to an extract from the previous video. (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzWT8a9PVMCcVnByTFBzQW81X1k)
We finish the class showing a short summary of the contents.

Session 3
We start this session with a review activity. Students will play a "Kahoot" game with different questions about what they have learnt. (https://play.kahoot.it/#/k/22aceaef-35ae-4deb-bb27-f553be19a3f9)
Then we make a brainstorming activity to find out what they know about cell structure. We introduce some vocabulary for help. Then we show the inner structure of an animal cell with the name of its parts and organelles.
Memory activity: students will work in pairs and they will have to label a similar picture with the correct names.
We watch the video "cell organelles and functions" to learn the functions of each cell organelle. We will provide students with a chart containing all the information.
Students will complete two charts with information from cell structure: one with the names of the organelles and another with missing information, whether name of organelles or function.
Finally we will make groups of five students and they will have to make a concept map (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzWT8a9PVMCcWkhUWmhKenZaUFE). We will ask them to check their knowledge with an interactive activity first (https://en.educaplay.com/en/learningresources/2989036/cell_organelles.htm) and then we will encourage them to look for information on the Internet to complete the map.

Session 4
The aim of this session will be making a poster.
We begin this session showing the students two pictures of tissues, one of muscle tissue and another from nylon. We ask them about similarities and differences and will encourage them to extract conclusions about what they see and how are cells related to it. (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzWT8a9PVMCcOHhuZVV4TUljNlE)
We will show the video "the four types of tissues" and will give them a summary of the video. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKWTJ3_-1E8)
In groups of five, they will have to make a summary of one of the four types of tissues presented extracting information from the text, the video, the Internet and looking for pictures to illustrate their work with visual examples. They will present their works to their classmates and they will be put together to make a poster. (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BzWT8a9PVMCcUWlodTgxckQ5dUU)

Session 5
This is a reviewing session. So students will be working on pairs to complete a webquest about cells. It is found on https://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=1201149

Session 6
This is the final assessment session.
Students will work individually to check out what they have learnt. They will make three activities:
1.         Complete a text with the appropriate words (this time words have not been previously given to students).
2.         Label the picture of a cell with the names of ten organelles and explain the function of at least five of them.
3.         Explain how cells organize and what are the main characteristics of each type of tissue.

Finally, this is the link to the template of my unit.
